Why are companies running their solutions and services at Hyperscalers?
Hyperscalers are providers running Hyperscale data center. The Hyperscale data center are systems connecting thousands/millions of servers within a network of Grid Computing. This setup makes them expandable, scalable and allows high performance, massive throughputs.
This huge amount of computing resources can manage volatile and ever-changing workloads of individual customers perfectly, as this can be balanced out across the complete environment.
Companies using hyperscalers do not need complex upfront planning for hardware resources, which typically require long lead times. This is a major cost driver in their own data center, as it forces companies to buy hardware in advance to avoid bottlenecks.
In addition, companies always need to plan for seasonal peak loads (Black Friday, end of year, end of quarter…) in their own data center. During the rest of the time, hardware is heavily underutilized.
Scale up and down can be done flexibly via the Hyperscaler Web UI’s, but it is much more advanced to use the Hyperscaler API’s to trigger these changes. These triggers should ideally be implemented within the company software solution taking into account the various parameters for scaling and should not require any manual interaction.

Since hyperscalers have highly redundant environments, failure of the hardware environment is not a problem, and another virtual server can immediately take over the workload. The same applies to network and storage resources.
Hyperscalers support up to 3 availability zones in their environment. An availability zone has an independent network and power supply, so if one availability zone fails due to a network and/or power outage, the other zone can take over without delay. Of course, the software requires a special solution design to perform the failover automatically, or it requires a manual configuration step.
On average, the hardware on the hyperscaler’s side is replaced much more frequently than in the company’s own data center. This, of course, brings a performance advantage, as newer and more modern hardware increases the performance of the software running on it. In addition to this advantage, a company has much greater location flexibility with hyperscalers than with its own data center. Very often, it makes sense to choose one (or more) hyperscaler site(s) that is closer to the company’s end users than its own data center.
Optimizing applications that need to scale flexibly is very beneficial because it allows you to save money during periods of low utilization and scale during peak periods. Your end users will appreciate the stable and fast running solutions.
